THE PILLARDS OF BASILICA
The Basilica de la Purísima Concepción is one of the most renowned monuments of Elorrio, as well as one of the most notable religious constructions dating from the Renaissance in the Basque Country.
It is the greatest of Bizkaia, not only in scale but also in the quality of the building, both inside and out.

THE “BARRIOS” OF ELORRIO
A town built by migrants
The rail links with the coast were the means by which many migrants arrived in Elorrio, seeking work in the factories. Many working-class neighbourhoods were built in order to house the growing population, with names such as LINCE, Belerin, IRE, the 40, San Luis, and Lourdes.
This guided walk offers an excellent opportunity to learn about the least-known aspect of the town’s history: its industrial heritage and workers’ neighbourhoods.

EXPERIENCE ELORRIO YOUR WAY
Our guided tours are designed to offer experiences that are unique and unforgettable. Some people prefer to feel sensations such as light, open spaces, the touch of water; others need to break a sweat in order to feel the effort of others. Those of us who have general learning disabilities enjoy Elorrio’s art and history through a variety of channels of perception, and since traditional guided visits aren’t right for all of us, this tour is an opportunity to hear the story in a different way.

THE WAYSIDE CROSSES
Elorrio has nine wayside marker crosses, all of them date from the XVI century. The Kurutzebarri, Kurutzondo, Gandondo and Txanberi crosses stand on roads that lead out of the town and mark the frontier betwen the rural and urban areas. This marker crosses may have been used on occasions as reference points for establishing a cordon sanitaire in case of epidemics, but their first and foremost use was as devotional images to which travellers could pray for blessings on leaving the protection of the town walls.
